National Apprenticeship Week Alfie Hurlock

Date: 6th February 2020
Author: Louise Ellison

Alfie Hurlock has been an apprentice at BP Rolls Group for just over 3 years, and has completed his IMI Level 2 Diploma Light Vehicle Service and Repair Principles

Alfie was introduced to BP Rolls by Andover College after he registered an interest in doing an apprenticeship. The college helped his through his application and interview process with us, and have supervised his training programme IMI Level 2 Diploma Light Vehicle Service and Repair Principles.

His apprenticeship, covering a variety of modules has involved Alfie spending one day a week in college, with the rest of the time training in our vehicle body repair workshop, where he has to complete a log book in order to evidence skills and knowledge in line with the course content.

His supervisor, Darren Boxall, is really pleased with the progress Alfie has made:

“With over 60 cars a week coming through our doors, it couldn’t be a better environment for our trainees to gain practical skills on a huge variety of cars. Alfie has worked hard throughout his apprenticeship, overcoming some personal obstacles and getting to grips with everything we have asked of him.”

Although apprentices earn a relatively low wage, Alfie explains that it’s worth it in order to get the right skillset for the job, and he is eager to achieve his career ambitions, setting his sights on further training in bodywork, Mechanical, Electrical and Trim (MET), strip and fit, along with a Thatcham Research approved Airbag course.

“I’d say that an apprenticeship is the best way into the trade. It’s great being able to learn while studying. Learning from the experience of others around me is much better than being sat in a classroom - my colleagues have been brilliant at sharing their knowledge. I’ve had great support from Darren, particularly with mental health, and I’m now looking forward to doing more training.”
