Tyres & Wheel Alignment

Tyre condition is imperative to the safety, handling and fuel efficiency of your vehicle. Our tyre bay stocks a range of budget, mid-range to premium tyres for all kinds of vehicles. We hold all the major tyre brands, and can supply and fit at competitive prices. It is important to have your tyres checked regularly to ensure they are giving you the best handling and comfort and ensure that any problems are identified and addressed before they pose a danger.

Tyre tread depth - the law

The legal minimum tread depth for cars in the UK is 1.6mm throughout a continuous band comprising the central three-quarters of breadth of the tread and around its entire outer circumference. Furthermore, drivers whose tyres fail to comply with the minimum tread depth requirements risk a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points for each illegal tyre.

Wheel alignment

Wheel Alignment is an important part of car maintenance. It refers to the angle and direction at which your tyres are set. Maintenance is a key factor to getting maximum value from your tyres as badly aligned tyres can affect road holding, increase fuel consumption and decrease the life of your tyres. Tyres that are correctly balanced and aligned will be safer and deliver better performance. We recommended your wheels be aligned every 10,000 miles or at least once a year, depending on how the vehicle is driven.

Your safety depends on the condition of your tyres, so if you have any queries please get in touch with our team of fully qualified technicians who will be happy to give your wheels and tyres a FREE check, just call 01264 335801.

How do wheels become misaligned?

Hitting kerbs or driving at speed through a pothole can result in wheel misalignment. Excessive or uneven tread wear is one major reason for tyres not lasting as long as they should is. If it continues without being remedied, this could become a significant safety hazard when bald patches appear on tyres that could make skidding or a blowout more likely. Correct wheel alignment is vital for safety, performance and road handling and cuts the cost of fuel bills, as aligned wheels reduces the rolling resistance of the tyre.

How to tell if you wheels need alignment

If you notice any of the following signs you should get your wheel alignment checked as soon as possible:

  • Your vehicle pulls to the side when travelling in a straight line
  • Your tyres are wearing unevenly or more rapidly than usual
  • Your steering wheel remains at an angle when you are driving straight

We recommended that wheels be aligned every 10,000 miles or at least once a year, depending on how the vehicle is driven.

As part of our wheel alignment service we also check the following:

  • Check tyre pressures, sizes and condition
  • Check for wheel damage
  • Check for suspension damage and worn suspension joints
  • Check wheel bearing play
  • Check manufacturer’s data
  • Check for body distortion / road test
  • Check radius plates / slip plates
  • Check ride heights / loading

Please remember…

Please make sure you bring your locking wheel nut key along for your appointment. If you have locking wheel nuts fitted, we will need the key in order to remove the wheels from your car, this can usually be found in the glove box or underneath the boot liner along with the spare tyre.
