BP Rolls Apprentice Achieves BPIF Diploma

Tierney Daley was introduced to the world of printed vehicle graphics in 2016 when she came to BP Rolls Signs & Graphics for work experience.

She was studying BTEC Art and Design at Andover College when her tutor recommended BP Rolls for her placement. With an interest in cars and graphic design, Tierney excelled during her time with the company and Director Gareth Price was so impressed that upon completing her course, he offered her an apprenticeship.

“From the first time Tierney did work experience with us, it was obvious that she had an eye for detail and was keen to learn. We needed to expand our workforce to accommodate an increasing workload but found that there was a lack of applicants with the right kind of knowledge and experience so we engaged with the British Printing Industries Federation to find out how we could offer apprenticeships to upskill new recruits.”

Tierney was employed by BP Rolls as trainee Print Minder, and enrolled on a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Digital Printing affiliated to the British Printing Industries Federation and assigned an Assessor to mentor her throughout the course.

As well as on the job within the printing facility at BP Rolls headquarters in Andover, Tierney also had to study via a combination of online modules, coursework, and classroom base training at the BPIF in London, where she met up with other apprentices from across the country.

The BPIF Assessor visited her at the BP Rolls studio to provide guidance on her coursework and to assess her practical skills every few months, until she completed everything, passing the qualification with flying colours!

When asked about the positives and negatives of completing an apprenticeship, Tierney explained that she had learnt more than she though she would, but that it was not without it’s challenges:

“By doing an apprenticeship I was able to further my education and learn new skills without getting myself into the debt of university. The hardest thing about it is that you have to be really disciplined to do the self-studying and completing the coursework, but I’m really proud that I am now responsible for single handedly running 7 printers and I can also show others how it all works. “It’s a bit unusual to be the only female in a department but everyone in my team gets along really well. I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship at BP Rolls; although it’s a big company, it’s really relaxed and has a family feel to it. It’s a good place to work.​””

Since achieving her Extended Diploma, Tierney has also completed a course in Adobe Illustrator in preparation for taking on more of the design side of things within the department as the business grows, and hopes that one day she will be able to train new employees.
